2K Recruits Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Change Follows Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement follows a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full text from the president's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.
The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following several months of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming space is vast, having devoted the recent years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Take on the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is yours."
The game lacks an confirmed release date or platforms, but players can anticipate further news as creation advances.
